The Place Beyond The Pines (2012) Film Review

My review of Derek Cianfrance’s ambitiously scoped but lacklusterly executed The Place Beyond The Pines, starring Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, and Ray Liotta. A wider demonstration of his range than 2009’s heart-crushing Blue Valentine, Cianfrance’s latest tells a multigenerational story about masculinity in the American middle class. At times touching, partly wrenching, and often incohesive, The Place Beyond The Pines does still include electrifying performances from the inimitable Gosling and the committed Eva Mendes. Worth a look if only to admire Cianfrance’s handiwork, the film will likely have as many haters as lovers.
