Sean L. Malin video-reviews James Franco’s and Travis Mathews’s collaborative docudrama Interior. Leather Bar. (2013), an Official Selection of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. An experimental art-film drawn from the concept of forty-minutes of missing material from William Friedkin’s film Cruising (1980), Franco’s and Mathew’s project features both filmmakers and the actor Val Lauren in the Al Pacino role. Interior. Leather Bar. is an important work, one that inverts genre expectations and uses meta-experimentalization to explore sexual representation, queer treatments, and Hollywood habits in profound ways. However, clocking in at only 60 minutes of running time, the film will likely only find an educational or cult audience, and is bound to be denigrated by the dismissal of mainstream theaters, despite the presence of the ubiquitous Franco.
