Nymphomaniac, Vol. I (2013) Video Review

My video review of Lars Von Trier’s NYMPHOMANIAC, VOL. I, starring Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stacy Martin, Stellan Skarsgard, Uma Thurman, Christian Slater, and Shia LaBeouf. The first in a two-volume epic character drama, VOLUME I is only half a film, and this essay speaks to the difficulties in that distinction. However, in Von Trier’s hilarious and dark commentary on sexuality, social behavior, and all things philosophically questionable, the film looks to be at least half of a possible two-part masterpiece. Additionally, it features fantastic performances from newcomer Stacy Martin, Von Trier stalwarts Skarsgard and Gainsbourg, and the ubiquitous Shia LaBeouf. This video essay is one part of a two-video series for CineMalin: Film Commentary and Criticism.
