My review of Sebastian Silva’s acclaimed Sundance feature, Crystal Fairy, starring Michael Cera, Gaby Hoffmann, and several of the writer-director’s brothers. Silva’s latest, one of a two-part Cera extravaganza – the other, Magic Magic, forthcoming with theatrical distribution – follows the obnoxious American student Jamie, whose aggressive attitudes and social ineptitude alienates his partners on the quest for a mescal consumption. Featuring two exemplary performances by Cera and the child actor Gaby Hoffmann as the eponymous Crystal Fairy, a flighty hippie masking deeply-seated emotional issues, Silva’s feature was a smash hit when it premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival. Though perhaps a minor film for Sebastian Silva’s massive talent, Crystal Fairy is likely to be remembered for its novelty and introduction to two major comic performances.
